Intermediate Skipper Course Overview

Are you confident with your basic boat handling? Would you like to know more? Then the Intermediate Skipper training is for you.

What We Will Cover

This practical course is conducted in your boat and gives confidence in the following areas:

  • Launch & Recovery
  • Practical Boat handling
  • Coming alongside the wharf or another vessel
  • Manovering in confined spaces
  • Intermediate boat handling including high speed, boat safety
  • Reversing a boat
  • Man overboard
  • Dropping and retrieving an anchor
  • Fire, sinking, running aground free surface effect and collision
  • Knots and lines
  • Navigation including GPS, Chartwork
  • Buoys and Beacons
  • Flare operation
  • Rules of the road at sea
  • Correct stowage of equipment
  • Engines & controls
  • Protective clothing – importance

From basic childhood dinghy experience to jet boats, runabouts and small launches. Lots of fun with offshore power boat racing. Large commercial vessel handling, including both passenger and vehicular ferries and tour boats on Lake Taupo Fullers Ferries, The Auckland Harbour Master vessels as a Maritime Officer.

Our Three Courses

Basic Boating Skills

The aim of this course is provide a basic practical introduction to boating on the water for those with little or no previous experience.

Conducted in your own boat, this is not a classroom course and all the instructions are done out on the water.

This course is available as a one-on-one training or ladies only.

Intermediate Skipper

This course is taught in your own boat. Either one on one, or you and a friend or family member for the same price.

This training is a hands-on practical on-water course, as opposed to sitting in a classroom.

This course is a full day course.

Advanced Skipper

This course is a full day course.

Will give you the confidence to complete a short coastal trip (daytime only), conducted in your own boat totally hands on.

By this stage applicants must be reasonably confident and a proficient skipper.

No, you may prefer to training such as navigation, buoys and beacons in the comfort of your home.

We will apply your payment to the next available date that is suitable for you. Refunds only on a case-by-case basis.

You will receive a certificate of completion for each course you attend and complete.

Yes, by all means bring another person f the training is aboard your boat
